I think that learning only one thing is what is dangerous. I have always, throughout my life, tried to learn not only the "task at hand" but all the things which are related (or in many cases not directly related) to what I am doing.
For example, I love photography, so I spent time understanding the behaviors of light, how atmospheric conditions impact light, how film types and digital sensors record light (and the variations between them)...essentially "Why" it all works.
I have done the same in business and technology...I love technology, learning how things work, why a given technology is appropriate in solving a business problem, what the limitations of the technology are, etc. In business, I learned management, marketing, finance and accounting, strategy, etc…
